Wyoming Petroglyphs

Petroglyph near Dubois, WI
Petroglyph near Dubois, WI

Drove West from Dubois WY, out Rt 26 to the Whiskey Mountain Wilderness Study Area to observe petroglyphs.

We turned onto Fish Hatchery Road leading into The Dubois Badlands Wilderness Study Area (WSA). This WSA encompasses 4,520 acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land. It borders the Fitzpatrick Wilderness area. WSAs are undeveloped federal lands that retain their primeval character and influence, without permanent improvements or human habitation, and are managed so as not to impair their suitability for preservation as wilderness.

The area we visited is along Trail Lake Rd Dubois, WY 82513 (here is the Lat/Long 43.512051, -109.567499). The road was an improved dirt road, hard packed in good shape. Good enough for a motorcycle. We were on it for about 8 miles into a very scenic wilderness area. The Torry Lake Ranch was nearby as were the three lakes, Tory Lake, Ring Lake and Trail Lake. At Ring Lake we spotted a free camp ground with about 4 camper vans and some guys pulling out an outboard motorboat. I spoke to the guys pulling out the outboard, they said the camping was free, and could stay for up to two weeks. They indicated roughly where we could find the petroglyphs. We bid them thanks and headed off in the direction they pointed. We parked along Trail Lake and hiked up into the hillside. Sure enough we spotted three very interesting petroglyphs.

Here is a video and some photos of the petroglyphs. Will add more pics and info soon.
