Taos Pueblo near Taos, New Mexico—a living community that's been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years. These adobe structures stand as the oldest continuously inhabited communities in all of North America.
Walking these ancient pathways and stepping inside the pueblo dwellings was a humbling experience. We were surrounded by the same sights and smells that people experienced here centuries before Columbus ever sailed. To put this in perspective: a thousand years ago, Europe was deep in feudalism and the Dark Ages, with the Viking era just beginning to wane. Meanwhile, these Indigenous peoples were thriving here—demonstrating remarkable self-reliance, courage, and resourcefulness in their intimate relationship with the land.
For me, standing in the pueblo became a deeply spiritual and transformative moment. It made me reflect on how brief the American story really is compared to the ancient legacy of the people who called this place home long before our nation existed.
