Pasties and Sasquatch in the UP

We are in the upper peninsula of Michigan in a lovely campground named Superior Times. We are very lucky to be having a superior time right now… and for me to regale you about pasties and Sasquatch! Everywhere you go up here you see signs for Pasties. This is pronounced with a flat “a” as in the word ‘at’, I’ve been told by the proprietor here at Superior Times. I thought that the people up here did not know how to spell pastries! But NO LORRAINE you’re wrong. A pasty is a specialty of the UP. It is a small meat pie with a thick crust folded over and baked. It was brought here by Cornish miners who came to the copper mines in the 1840’s. It was a convenient way to bring a full meal with you into the mine where miners worked long hours. Pasties may have meat and potatoes in them but they can also be just vegetables or fruit. We ate an apple one yesterday and oh boy was that delicious.

Outside the little “pasty shop” we selected was a big statue of Sasquatch! But that isn’t the only place we have seen him. He seems to pop up all over the place in these small towns. Outside of Kayaking stores and you can buy a stuffed Sasquatch as you board the sightseeing ‘pictured rocks’ cruise, which we did today., This guy is everywhere! Well it turns out that the wilderness of the UP is where Big Foot has had many sightings, 225 to date. (One sighting was even this past winter) And he certainly is popular here! Just as we sat and ate our pasty outside of Muldoon’s pasty shop several people stopped by to take a photo with the guy. You would think he was friendly or something!
Anyway I highly recommend pasties, they are delicious and if you run across Big Foot while you’re eating one……RUN!
