Remember Invasion of the Body Snatchers? Original 1956- remade 1978!
Another dramatic title for a silly post, but it happened last night. It was July 1st yesterday, Canada day, and we are in Canada! It took most of the day to get to our current campsite, Booth Landing in Powassin, Ontario. It is beautiful here, we are on a tiny lake named Wasi but more about that later.

After getting our camper set up, it was about 8:00-8:30 pm. As darkness descended we expected some fireworks, partying and general rowdiness! (Think of Fourth of July in the States) None of that was happening here. In fact everyone’s camp was dark, really dark and closed up. We ate our dinner inside because it seemed a little buggy outside. Then I took Lola out for her evening pee at about 9:30. I noticed a lot of flying insects around the door because we had the lights on inside and also the awning lights on. I opened the screen to come in and into the camper they swarmed! About a million bugs (mostly mosquitos). Holy cow! We quickly swatted and killed most of them not realizing that we had not closed the outside door when I came inside, only the screen door. As we busied ourselves killing bugs a new invasion began, they swarmed the screen door, clinging to it as if for life!!
Now it’s bedtime. Oh no, Henry wants to lock up but that means opening the screen door to close the outside door. If we were smart we would have shut the lights first. Did we do that? NO OF COURSE NOT! Ok, it was a long day and we are new at this but WE WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN!! He was quick about it but the number of mosquitos that swarmed the camper was outrageous. We were swatting them for hours and then realized that we should shut all lights and only keep on one where they would aggregate! We turned the A/C on cold and closed the bedroom door.
This morning the number of dead mosquitos was so high that we swept them up in piles to eliminate. The shower floor was encrusted with their bodies! It was a massacre! Thankfully we were spared endless bites but we now know why it was so dark here…. the people here are in the know. It’s us or them as darkness descends! Tonight we will let the darkness come with no lights! And suffer fewer bites!
